Roof Storm Damage Checklist

Colorado is known for its beautiful, sunny days but still gets its share of bad weather. Colorado storms can wreak havoc on your home, especially your roof, from hail storms to blizzards and everything in between. While no homeowner enjoys dealing with any damage to their home, having a plan in place can go a long way when recovering after a significant storm. If you’ve been confused about what to do after the storm has passed, this blog is for you! Keep reading to discover our roof storm damage checklist for five simple steps you should take after the storm has subsided.

The only roof storm damage checklist you need to recover from a significant weather event

1. Conduct a roof inspection

When it is safe to go outside again, the first step on the checklist is to visually inspect your roof for damage. When doing this, walk around the perimeter of your home, making sure to document any damage with pictures and a written list. The reason that you want to do this is to help later when dealing with your insurance. Some examples of damage include dented, torn, curled, or missing siding.

2. Visually inspect your gutters, vents, and windows

The next areas you should inspect once the storm has completely passed are your gutters, vents, and windows. Some typical damage to these areas includes broken glass, loose weather stripping, and torn screens. Make sure to also check gable vents and other overhangs that might be less obvious.

3. Inspect the entirety of your home’s exterior

After you have looked at your home’s exterior, it’s time to move on to the yard. Walk around your home’s outdoor areas looking for fallen tree branches, missing fence posts, or damage to any lawn furniture you may have left outside. It’s also a good idea to check on patios and decks when dealing with hail storms.

4. Check your attic and ceiling for damage

Once your visual inspection is complete around the exterior of your home, the next places you should inspect are your attic and ceilings. When dealing with a storm, the most common damage is going to be leaks and water damage. Water damage can appear inside even if your home appears undamaged from the outside. Make sure to use a flashlight in dark places and check for mold forming if it has been a few days since the storm.

5. Hire a trusted roofing contractor to fix any damage

Many contractors will likely be busy after a large storm, but you must start repairing your home as soon as possible to avoid even more damage to your home. When looking for a roofing company, avoid being pulled in by deals alone, instead, make sure to evaluate your roofer fully by looking at reviews and researching independent roofing contractors. Once you find your roofer, they can assess your damage with a professional eye, provide an estimate of costs, and replace or repair your roof.

“Summit Roofing is top-notch! I was taken through the process of replacing my roof so smoothly. My husband and I had so many questions and concerns it took us time to decide on what we wanted to do, but the owner was always so patient and helpful with us, right there to explain the whole process and knew the newest requirements just put in place this summer with Larimer county. We were more than just impressed. The day came when the roofers came out, and they were all very professional and did an excellent job! I highly recommend Summit Roofing Solutions.”
