Does size really matter with hail?
You may be asking yourself, what size hail will damage a roof? The largest ever recorded in Colorado — a record set in August 2019 —was 4.83 inches in diameter and roughly the size of a softball.
But hail as small as a pea can cause damage to roofs given the right conditions. According to the Consumer Insurance Guide, hail between ¼ (size of a pea) and ¾ (size of a dime/penny) of an inch can damage your roof. “After a free fall from more than 30,000 feet, it hits your roof and everything else at more than 70 miles per hour,” the guide stated.
Hail damaged roof repair is common in Colorado
The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Group reports that the most extensive hail damage months in Colorado are typically May, June, July and August. The state regularly comes in No. 2 in the nation (behind Texas) for hail damage claims. So, if you live in Colorado, you can count on some form of hail damage in your immediate future.
You may ask yourself, “Do I need to replace the roof after hail?” If you don’t, you could be devaluing your home. Here’s why: home Inspectors often look for common patterns when inspecting hail damage. Typically, eight dents on a 10×10 square (100 square feet) is a common number inspectors look for, according to the International Association of Certified Home inspectors. Here’s a handy guide to understand what inspectors look for.
