Colorado sets new state record for biggest hail stone

New records for large hailstones are being made as we speak. Colorado is in the center of what is called “Hail Alley,” and with climate change, storms are growing more volatile. And hailstones are growing bigger as well. In August 2023, Colorado set a new state record for the largest hailstone at 5.25 inches in diameter. It hit during afternoon storms in Yuma County. Can you imagine that piece of ice slamming itself like a bullet into your roof? According to this article in Scientific American, a baseball-sized hailstone falls at 100 mph. That would be hard for even the toughest roof tiles to withstand. That is one reason Colorado is the No. 2 state in the country for hail damage claims behind Texas. The state also consistently remains among the top states with the most hail-damaging storms in the country, according to the Insurance Information Institute. In fact, in 2023, Colorado had 621 severe weather events, 400 of which were hail storms, according to the National Weather Service

Hail damage claims expected in Colorado every year

In Colorado, hail damage is expected and is typically covered by your insurance policy. If you have to call your insurance agent to make a roof damage claim, they will likely have a process zeroed in to make it easy for you and the qualified roofer you choose to get the work done seamlessly. Your agent knows that the longer your damaged roof continues to withstand the elements, your home is living on borrowed time. Why? When hail slams into your tiles, it creates divots and cracks. Enough of those divots and cracks could result in water leaking into your attic, and subsequently into your ceilings. Trust us, waking up to water dripping on your head is one of the worst sensations. Then there is the sudden realization that life is about to get tough as you navigate the repair and replacement of not only a roof but also internal structures damaged by water.

Ready for a no-obligation evaluation of your claims?

If you suspect you have damage after a storm, contact Summit Roofing Solutions for a no-obligation evaluation of your home. If you have damage and we advise you to do so, make a claim with your insurance provider. In order to help you with your claim process, we advise you to have a representative from our company present. Once your home is approved for replacement, schedule repairs and replacements with us. Your insurance proceeds should be enough to cover the costs of repairs. Your deductible should be your only “out-of-pocket” expense.

Consider impact-resistant shingles in your roofing claim

With Colorado being smack dab in the middle of Hail Alley, and knowing that storms are growing in frequency, it might be worth it to consider hail-resistant shingles. These shingles are engineered in a couple of ways: reinforcing a standard shingle with a polymer-based mesh, and adding rubber-like polymers to the asphalt composition of the tiles, according to Owens Corning, with which Summit Roofing is a preferred contractor. Using impact-resistant shingles can help your roof last longer, and homeowners may get a discount from their insurance for using them.

At Summit Roofing Solutions, we specialize in installing architectural composition shingles that include high wind and hail-resistant shingles. You can check out which shingles will work best for you here.

More About Hail Damage Roofing Insurance Claims

Once a major hail storm rolls through town, you may notice the knocks on your door becoming more frequent. Now, it is understandable that you may not know the difference between a local contractor and one who just flew into town to take advantage of the situation. While many out-of-town roofing companies are legitimate, others are simply on your doorstep for a quick buck. Rely on your gut. Even though time IS of the essence, you do have time to get some proper bids on repairing the damage to your home. Trustworthy roofing companies such as Summit Roofing Solutions will be happy to climb up, take pictures to show you what they observed, and they will give you an estimate on the spot. Note: It is very important that you never sign a contract with a roofing contractor going door to door, hours after a storm. These contractors are usually “storm chasers” that are “here today, gone tomorrow.” Always contract with a local, reputable roofing company, and ask for references.

Also, beware of contractors who offer cash back to cover your deductible; they may be cutting corners. Colorado Senate Bill 12-038 makes this an illegal practice. Know your rights and use a reputable roofing contractor.
